SYNOPSIS

Mitchell and Webb is a sketch comedy series that tackles historical moments, news, and awkward social situations with a self-aware approach- poking fun at life's problems without trying to solve them.

HOW WE ACHIEVED IT

We delivered a broad range of VFX work for Mitchell & Webb, combining character effects, environmental work, green-screen composites and action-based effects across a variety of sketches.

For the environment work, we recreated an 18th-century London street using a combination of background photography, 2D elements and a CG carriage. For interior shots, we replaced the green-screen windows with views of the same period street, creating a seamless connection between the interior and exterior environment. In another sketch, we transformed the backdrop of a moving shot, adding snow and steam while removing modern features from the house. This involved complex rotoscoping, with particular attention to fine hair detail, to accurately isolate the characters and seamlessly integrate them into the environment.

Alongside this, we worked across a range of action sequences, including the creation of a laser beam asset designed to interact with the atmosphere in the scene and across multiple camera angles. For a cowboy shootout, we integrated smoke, impacts, sparks and bullet ricochets to enhance the action and bring greater energy to the sequence.

We also delivered a range of blood and injury work. For a pirate-themed board game sketch, we created character wounds, cannon fire, blood splatters and a knife wedged into a character’s hand. In another sketch centred around a luxury suitcase, we created and animated an exploding dog asset- integrating fur, blood and post-explosion debris- whilst keeping the effect within the show’s comedic tone.
