SYNOPSIS

9 Bodies in a Mexican Morgue is a tense, atmospheric thriller set against the unforgiving backdrop of the Mexican jungle. With themes of survival, paranoia, and nature’s indifference, the series demanded seamless visual effects that could enhance its environmental storytelling and visceral intensity without breaking the grounded tone. Our VFX work played a critical role in shaping the show’s dramatic terrain, dynamic weather, and moments of violent confrontation.

HOW WE ACHIEVED IT

Escarpment – Cliffside Geography & Character Integration:
We created a striking 3D escarpment - a steep, jagged hill profile that features prominently in the narrative. Characters walking along its narrow edge were composited against extended digital terrain, enhancing the verticality and tension of each shot. Using a combination of plate photography and digital matte environments, we ensured the cliff felt both expansive and dangerous.

Jungle Drop-Off – Lydia Clinging to the Edge:
In a key suspense sequence, we enhanced the peril of Lydia hanging off a jungle cliff by digitally building the drop below her. A jungle environment was composited behind her, complete with layered vegetation, depth fog, and subtle camera movement, creating a vertigo-inducing view into the dense rainforest below.

Blood Splat & Slash Wound:
For one of the show’s more shocking moments, we delivered a stylised neck slash with accompanying blood splatter. Using digital blood simulations and practical references, the effect was designed to be impactful yet grounded, with fine-tuned timing, trajectory, and surface interaction for maximum realism.

Escarpment at Sunrise – 3D Vegetation & Lighting Integration:
A visually poetic scene at dawn featured a wide shot of the escarpment bathed in early light. We extended the natural set with 3D foreground trees, carefully lit and textured to match the sunrise mood. Atmospheric fog and soft lens flares were added in compositing to enhance depth and tone.

Weather FX – Sky Replacements, Lightning & Rain:
To heighten mood and danger across several sequences, we replaced skies with custom matte-painted storm systems. Dynamic lightning strikes were animated and timed for dramatic beats, while layered rain simulations were added to plates with surface interaction, mist, and camera lens effects to increase realism.

3D Creature Detail – Lizard Tail:
We created a brief but detailed CG lizard tail, seen slithering out of frame to subtly increase tension and reinforce the unpredictable jungle environment. Motion, lighting, and texture were closely matched to practical reference for a seamless insert.

Fire Stick Enhancement:
A glowing fire stick used in several scenes was enhanced with flickering light, ember particles, and interactive glow passes. This added both visual interest and practical light interplay on characters and nearby surfaces.
