Adrift in a big, confusing world and armed with nothing but a bit of hope and a lot of desperation, Jen begins her journey to find her maybe-superpower; in doing so, she might discover the joy of being just kind of ok.
Extraordinary is a coming-of-age comedy that follows the journey of Jen, a (relatively!) normal 25 year old – in a world where being normal is completely not the norm. At 18, everyone else harnessed a superpower – join Jen on her quest to find hers.
The Flying Colour Company has loved being a part of Extraordinary and testing our artists’ creative skills by bringing weird and wonderful powers to life. Creating invisibility, levitation, flying and time rewinds (to name a few) was not only a wonderful exercise in creativity but also a fun challenge, as the briefs given were fairly abstract and allowed for lots of exciting variations.
Our Head of VFX described one particularly wacky transformation:
‘While there were technical aspects to the effect, it really was a creative challenge.
The brief we were given was more conceptual than visual: the transformation needed to be funny, ridiculous, and needed to feel out of Jizzlord’s control.
Translating those concepts into images was challenging, but it was also the fun part of the process.
So we “rolled” him into a chaotic ball of cat parts and human limbs, abruptly sucked up into thin air. The sudden appearance of a full-sized man generates a shockwave: it is reality rippling around him, as a bunch of matter disappears and a bigger one violently enters the fabric of space/time. We wanted to also give a slight sense of physical trauma, so in the aftermath we see clumps of hair floating around him. We’re not sure if it is cat fur or human hair. We like to think that every time this happens, he loses a little bit of hair due to the rough nature of the transformation.’
Extraordinary is out now on Disney Plus.
